| | | | 1 | President's Message
Hi to all our club members and those looking to join our family friendly club.
I would like to welcome you all to the new Surf Life Saving season.
I see this season building on the success of last season in all areas and the Club continuing to grow in membership. It is exciting to announce the news that our new facility has been approved by the Cockburn City Council, with a construction cost of $6.5 Mil. Construction is due to commence in September, with a time frame to build of 12 months, allowing us to move in at the start of the 2012/13 Season.
To prepare the Club for our growth and move, we have restructured the board; roles responsible for delivering services on the beach report to the Club Captain, Sharee Hart; and roles responsible for delivering services off the beach reporting the Vice President, Dan Richardson.
This season we see seven new members joining the board, Daniel Richardson as Vice President, Keith Lewis as Director of Finance, Marilyn Selden as Director of Surf Life Saving, Darren Spencer as Director of Competition & Training, Garry Hart as Director of Education & Training and Linda Field as Director of House & Social role with Cath Spencer as her assistant. I welcome these members to the Board. It is very encouraging to see new faces in these positions and to give some of our longer serving members a break.
In closing, I would like to welcome back all of our existing members and a new welcome to all new members joining the Club. I believe this year will be even better than previous years, continuing to build on our success at competitions and expanded Life Saving Services. Combined with the preparation to move to our new facility, it will be a very busy year, so if you would like to get involved please let me know.
Michael White (President - Coogee Beach SLSC)

Youth Active Council
These are exciting times for our club, in a few years time we will have a new Surf Club building that will be the envy of most of the surf clubs in our region. With this in mind, Coogee Beach Youth Active Council has been formed to allow our youngsters to become part of the future decision making in our Club. They meet once a month at the Club rooms and have formed a committee that replicates the Board of Directors. They also represent them selves at Board of Directors meetings. Some of the ideas under discussion are items such as training, fund raising, club outings and future camps etc.
Last year the ideas and proposals raised in the YAC meetings immediately lead to fund raising and, having approached Bunnings Bibra Lake, lead to a tin rattle on two occasions which netted approximately $600-00. T shirts for the committee have been donated by BGC Australia and last July the members were invited to BGC's head office at Mount Street, Perth where they were taken on a tour of the BGC Group's diverse companies followed by a slap up lunch!
So, if you're aged between 14 and 20, interested in helping the Youth of the club, then please come along and have a chat and meet up with your fellow club members and throw some ideas around. Pizza and soft drinks supplied. Check the notice board for the date of the next meeting or ask any one of the members.
The Youth Active Council would also like to thank the management and staff of BGC Australia and Bunnings Bibra Lake for their help and kind support over the last year.

On Friday the 16th April, the Annual Coogee Beach SLSC awards will be presented at the Aloca Social Club Hall. | | | 9 | New Clubrooms - Poore Grove
Good progress has been made this year on the development of an Integrated Community Facility and new Regional Beach Access Node at Poore Grove, Coogee Beach, incorporating the new clubrooms.
Tenders will be issued in July 2009 for the Site Development activities for the new Clubrooms at Poore Grove, Coogee. This tender will construct the new 150 bay carpark, develop a Public recreation area with grassed picnic and BBQ areas, as well as providing site services and initial building site works in preparation for a subsequent Building Development tender hopefully in 2010.
The proposed clubroom location is on City of Cockburn managed reserve at Poore Grove, south of the Coogee Beach Holiday Resort in the Woodman Point Regional Park . The building has been carefully designed to blend into the area with minimal impact, recognizing environmental and social considerations of the area. The two level segment of the building will be located in a weed infested hollow between the primary and secondary sand dunes immediately adjacent to the existing carpark, with the eastern single level section being built on the secondary sand dune.
Proposed Clubrooms
This new facility will incorporate custom designed operational and training surf lifesaving clubroom facilities for our club. This includes equipment storage areas, changerooms, gymnasium, modern first aid, and operations rooms, youth lounge, lookout area and training rooms, multifunction room and kitchen, as well as public facilities, a new 150 car and bus car parking area, a grassed public open space area with shade shelters, public BBQ’s, and a new beach access to the beach on Cockburn Sound.
Significant sustainability design elements have been included in the building design, such as passive heating and cooling elements, and use where possible of recycled products to reduce embedded energy and green house gas reductions. The design has also included, rain water harvesting, and greywater recycling for use onsite, with solar energy production from solar panels and a future wind turbine,
Rehabilitation and revegetation of some 4.5 hectares of degraded Woodman Point Regional Park around Poore Grove, is also being progressed as a part of this community project. This element of the project is fully funded, and revegetation to date has had a quite high survival rate.
It is envisaged that the Building Development stage 1 tender, for the core lifesaving clubrooms and public facilities, will occur in 2010, with completion late 2011, with stage 2 a public kiosk, following in subsequent years, dependent upon funding.

Beach Safety
SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS
Only swim between the red and yellow flags at the beach.
- The red and yellow flags indicate the safest place to swim when lifeguards and lifesavers patrol beaches.
- Always swim or surf at places patrolled by lifesavers or lifeguards.
- Always swim under supervision.
- If you are unsure of surf conditions, ask a lifeguard or lifesaver.
- Don't swim directly after a meal.
- Don't swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Always check the depth of the water.
- Never run or dive in the water. Even if you have checked the depth, water conditions can change.
- If you get into trouble in the water, stay calm. Signal for help, by holding up one arm and waving, float and wait for assistance.
- Learn how to spot a rip and keep clear of it. A rip can be recognised by sand coloured or rippled water running out to sea when the water on either side is generally cleaner. The waves may also be larger and breaking further out to sea on both sides of the rip.
- Keep the beach clean, put your rubbish in a bin and keep off the duned areas. They are there to preserve the beach environment.
COVER UP (SLIP, SLAP, WRAP)
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, and the highest level of the most dangerous skin cancer, malignant melanoma. Surf Lifesavers are exposed to the sun during patrol hours and are therefore advised to observe the following rules:
- Seek shade whenever possible, particularly between 10am and 3pm.
- Wear loose fitting cool patrol T Shirts, preferably with long sleeves.
- Wear a wide brim hat or sun visor with legionnaire style side flaps.
- Wear 100% UV protection sunglasses whenever possible.
SUN SMART (SLOP ON)
Sunscreen lotion is available in the Clubrooms for club members to use. Coogee beach SLSC supports the Sun Smart program operated through the Health Department.
Sunscreens are both used and recommended by Surf Lifesavers. There are basically two types (a) Sun Reflectants (eg zinc) and (b) Sun Absorbents, which are the most common sunscreens. Surf Lifesaving Australia recommends the use of SPF (sun protection factor) 30+ Broad-Spectrum sunscreens.
The following hints are recommended for Surf Lifesavers and the public:
- Apply the sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going out in to the sun.
- Reapply the sunscreen regularly, particularly after swimming.
- Use in association with shade and clothing, not instead of them.
- In Australia, the sunlight is so strong that even when you are using SPF 30+ sunscreen you will still develop a tan. Also, you may still burn if you don't use other precautions as well as sunscreens.
Remember, when you are swimming, that UV rays penetrate at least 20cm into the water. Water also reflects UV rays back onto the skin, increasing the intensity of the sunlight. |
